Notes on Reed-solomon Codes

Reed-Solomon codes are examples of error correcting codes, in which redundant information is added to data so that it can be recovered reliably despite errors in transmission or storage and retrieval. The error correction system used on CD’s and DVD’s is based on a Reed-Solomon code. These codes are also used on satellite links and other communications systems. We will first discuss the general principles behind error correcting codes. Then we will explain one type of Reed-Solomon code, and discuss the algorithms for encoding using this code, and for decoding with error correction.

In this paper, we employ the concept of the Generalized Discrete Fourier Transform, which in turn relies on the Hasse derivative of polynomials, to give a general construction of Reed-Solomon codes over Galois fields of characteristic not necessarily co-prime with the length of the code.
